Open letter of academics objecting to the detention of Iranian economist, Dr. Fariborz Raisdana

We the undersigned, faculty and administrators of universities, condemn the detention in Iran of our colleague, Dr. Fariborz Raisdana, a well-known economist and writer. We demand his immediate and unconditional release.

Dr. Raisdana, is a courageous intellectual and activist who has consistently criticized the Islamic government’s economic and social policies, for which he has been the target of constant harassments by the multiple security apparatuses of the regime. As a member of the Executive of Iran Writers Association, Raisdana has exposed the atrocities of the regime and has defended the rights of the working majority.

In face of the country’s growing political and economic crisis, the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in preparation of its controversial policy of removing subsidies from major commodities and services, is resorting to silencing its critics like Dr. Raisdana and others.

We call upon all progressive people of the world and international organizations to condemn the continued violations of human rights in Iran, and demand the immediate release of Dr. Raisdana and other political prisoners, women activists, student leaders, trade unionists, artists and journalists.
