Reza Shahabi’s communiqué about a human rights award, Communiqué number16 from the Reza Shahabi Defence Committee

I have heard that an award for human rights in the field of labour has been dedicated to me and delivered to a person named “ Mehdi Kouhestani”. I would like to announce publicly that neither me nor my family and friends, who believe in workers’ independence, were aware of this event.

Second Communiqué from the Reza Shahabi Defence Committee

 As of today, fifteen days have passed from the commencement of Reza Shahabi’s hunger strike, in section 209 of Evin prison. We have no news of Reza’s conditions.  The last time that we heard his voice was on 4^th December 2011 and he spoke in a weak and shaking tone, which reflected his poor condition.  There is a chance that Reza Shahabi may be left permanently disabled, and we still do not know whether or not he has been taken to hospital.

Reza Shahabi, a worker and board member of the Syndicate of Workers of Tehran Vahed Bus Company, is imprisoned in Evin prison since 12^th of June 2010 due to defending his and other workers’ rights and demands.

Labour activists in Iran continue to pay a heavy price for the achievement of their basic rights.  It has always been a policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) to persecute worker activists by intimidations, kidnapping and arrest without charge, or sentencing them to long imprisonment in shambolic and unjust trials. Even while in prison, their basic rights as a human being is being violated. Now the regime is doing its utmost to make this sort of treatment of labour activists to become of the norm. Therefore, there is frequent news of more workers activists being persecuted. Recent incidents confirm this.
